MacKenzie Tobin, a senior at Schley County High School in Ellaville, is one of more than 7,500 students who have reason to be extra thankful this holiday season. Tobin was the first student to be offered admission to the Class of 2020 at the nation's first state-chartered university, the University of Georgia.

UGA receives $1.1 million grant to support first-generation and low-income students
The University of Georgia has received a $1.1 million U.S. Department of Education grant to help support first-generation and college students from low-income families. UGA will receive funding beginning in September, distributed over the next five years under the Federal TRIO's Student Support Services Program.

New programming aims to ease the transition to UGA for transfer students
The Tate Student Center has launched a new initiative designed to help transfer students succeed at the University of Georgia. Dubbed the Transfer Student Experience, the initiative links transfer students with each other and with faculty, staff and administrators to help form a seamless adjustment to campus.
