Artist Kristin Casaletto takes a hard look at the South
What do Twinkies, canned hams, locusts and glitter have in common? Augusta-based artist and teacher Kristin Casaletto has used all of them to make art that engages with social issues. Primarily a printmaker, she likes to experiment with unusual objects. She once printed an etching of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, on a grilled cheese sandwich.

UGA art students push boundaries
Since the 1940s, the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia has shown the work of Master of Fine Arts degree candidates at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. This year's exit show takes place April 8 to May 14, with a free opening reception at the museum April 7 at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition will be up through UGA Commencement, with a slightly longer run than usual.

Peabody Media Center joins forces with FUSION and The Root for Black History Month
The Peabody Media Center, FUSION and The Root have launched a content partnership that will bring Peabody's rich media archive together with FUSION's diverse voices to explore issues of contemporary importance. This endeavor marks the first industry collaboration for the Peabody Media Center, a scholarly outreach arm of the prestigious Peabody Awards based at the University of Georgia, since it was launched last November.

Georgia Museum of Art receives statewide awards
The Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries presented the Georgia Museum of Art at the University Georgia with five awards at its annual conference, held in Augusta, Georgia, Jan. 18-20. The museum received the following awards: Education Program of the Year, Student Project, Exhibition of the Year, Community Service Award, and Museum Professional of the Year.

Painted distaffs coming to Georgia Museum of Art
The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will present the exhibition "To Spin a Yarn: Distaffs, Folk Art and Material Culture" from Jan. 21 through April 16. Organized by the Stephen F. Austin State University Galleries, this exhibition consists of about 40 decorated wooden distaffs, or spinning implements, from the collection of Michael T. Ricker. Originally simple sticks, they evolved into highly decorated objects with intense cultural significance, more important for their meanings than for their function.
