The University of Georgia Office of Sustainability and WUGA radio, along with the Athens-Clarke County Recycling Division, will host a "Recycling Happy Hour" on April 19 from 5-7 p.m. in the UGA intramural field parking lot off of College Station Road.

UGA sororities compete to green up their houses
March 19 marked the kickoff of the University of Georgia's first Sorority Green Cup, a month-long competition at UGA designed to reduce energy, water and waste and to increase recycling among 12 Panhellenic sororities and their houses.

UGA residence hall Building 1516 receives honors
Building 1516, the newest residence hall at the University of Georgia and the first to be LEED certified, received two honors recently: the on campus award by Student Housing Business for best use of green and sustainable construction and a gold LEED certification.

Interdisciplinary artist Amy Franceschini to visit UGA
The University of Georgia Ideas for Creative Exploration will host artist, educator and award-winning Web designer Amy Franceschini on March 6 at 4 p.m. in room 101 of the Miller Learning Center. Franceschini's visit to campus and lecture is sponsored by the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts and the Lamar Dodd School of Art.

EcoFocus Film Festival unveils 2012 film lineup
The 2012 EcoFocus Film Festival will open with a screening of Buck, a documentary about the animal-human bond. The camera follows cowboy Buck Brannaman as he teaches people to communicate with horses using compassion instead of punishment. Winner of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Audience Favorite award, Buck is one of 18 feature-length and 22 short films to be shown at EcoFocus, which this year runs from March 23-31 at Ciné and various locations across the University of Georgia campus.

Grass to gas: UGA researchers’ genome map speeds biofuel development
Researchers at the University of Georgia have taken a major step in the ongoing effort to find sources of cleaner, renewable energy by mapping the genomes of two originator cells of Miscanthus x giganteus, a large perennial grass with promise as a source of ethanol and bioenergy.

Six UGA students awarded campus sustainability grants
The University of Georgia Office of Sustainability has awarded grants totaling $20,000 to six students as part of its second annual Campus Sustainability Grants program. The money, which comes from the student-paid green fee, will fund projects aimed at advancing campus sustainability.

Interdisciplinary seminar at UGA to explore eco design
Art, ecology, horticulture and design come together in a seminar hosted by Ideas for Creative Exploration, or ICE, an interdisciplinary initiative for advanced research in the arts at the University of Georgia. The seminar will be held Oct. 5 at 5:15 p.m. in room 250 of the Miller Learning Center. This event is free and open to the public.
