Advisory:  Lecture to focus on implications of Lawrence v. Texas Supreme Court ruling

Attorney Paul Smith, who argued the winning side of Lawrence v. Texas before the U.S. Supreme Court, will discuss his experience and the broader implications of the homosexual sodomy case. In the 6-3 Supreme Court ruling this summer, the Texas statute outlawing same-sex sodomy was deemed unconstitutional. In addition, a 5-4 majority of the court, led by Justice Anthony Kennedy, went further and overturned the 1986 decision of Bowers v. Hardwick, which upheld a Georgia sodomy statute applicable to both homosexual and heterosexual couples.

The lecture will begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Oct. 10, in the University of Georgia School of Law’s Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom. This event is open to the public.
