Outstanding Advisor/Mentor Award Winners Chosen at UGA

ATHENS, Ga. – A faculty member in the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and an advisor in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences will receive the 2003 Outstanding Advisor/Mentor Award.

The award is presented each spring to recognize faculty or staff members for excellence in advising undergraduate students on selection of classes and courses of study, assisting them with academic problems, and providing guidance on related matters such as decisions about graduate school and careers.

This year’s recipients are Adam J. Davis, assistant professor of poultry science in the agricultural and environmental sciences college, and Leigh L. Holland, a senior academic adviser in the arts and sciences college’s Office of Academic Advising.

Davis won the award for a tenure or tenure-track faculty member. He has been advising students who are biological sciences majors in CAES for five years and averages advising 80 students per semester.

Holland was selected in the staff/nontenure-track category. A full-time advisor for 21 years, she works in both the arts and sciences advising office in New College and the satellite advising office in Brumby Hall. She advises about 400 students each semester.

Davis and Holland will receive a $500 prize and a plaque, and will be recognized in April at Honors Day and the Faculty Awards Banquet.

Award winners are chosen by a committee composed of a majority of students. In addition to Davis and Holland, the committee voted to present three Certificates of Excellence in Advising. The recipients are Mary Carruth, assistant director of the Women’s Studies Program; Angela Jones, an academic advisor in the Honors Program; and Kirsten Lynn Strausbaugh, a lecturer in advertising and public relations in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The committee also recognized Jere Morehead, associate provost and director of the Honors Program, for leadership in providing excellent academic advising services for undergraduate students.
