ATHENS, Ga. – The J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership at the University of Georgia will offer a workshop titled “Teaching Through Activities” on Thursday, July 31, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the J.W. Fanning Building. Classroom teachers, P.E. teachers, church youth group leaders, therapists, Scout leaders, outdoor professionals and any other persons who work with groups are invited to the one-day workshop that will equip group leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to engage their participants in different activities, games and initiatives.
Brendan Leahy, a leadership development specialist at the Fanning Institute, said that course participants will leave the program with a comprehensive and explanatory list of icebreakers, goal-setting activities and group problem-solving initiatives designed to entertain, educate and manage groups. Attendees will also be pleased to discover that the props and supplies necessary for more than100 games can fit into a small backpack.
“This workshop will provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for creating a high-energy and engaging learning environment,” said Leahy. “Such an environment will allow educators to better reach those learners for whom passive instruction will not work.”
Staff Development Units (SDUs) — continuing education credits to maintain teaching certification — and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available upon request; the workshop is open to organizations on a private basis as well.
