Some 300 high school students from Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina will have a chance to show off their skills during the ninth University of Georgia High School Math Tournament, which will be held on the UGA campus on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 8 a.m. in the biological sciences building.

Two individual winners will be awarded a $1,000 Charter Scholarship to attend UGA (subject to acceptance at UGA) for each of four years. In addition, the top five winners will get cash prizes, $100, $80, $60, $40 and $20 respectively. There will be small prizes for other high-scoring individuals and best teams. Organizers of the event are math professors Valery Alexeev, Ted Shifrin and student Boris Alexeev.

“The main goal is to increase students’ interest in mathematics and to attract them to the UGA mathematics program,” says Alexeev. “While it is more rigorous than some other mathematics competitions, it emphasizes the beauty of mathematics rather than rapid calculation skills.”

The event is sponsored by the department of mathematics, the UGA Parents and Families Association, the UGA Math Club and the UGA Office of Admissions. For more information, visit www.math.uga.edu/mathmeet.
