University Health Center to recognize Sexual Responsibility Week

Athens, Ga. – The University Health Center will sponsor activities in support of National Condom Day and will promote safer sex choices among UGA students on Monday, Feb. 14. Health Center staff and student volunteers will be at the Tate Student Center Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. where students will have an opportunity to participate in a number of activities focused on healthy sexuality and safer sex. Information about abstinence, sexual decision making, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and contraception will be provided.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, abstaining from oral, anal and vaginal sex is the most effective way to prevent STI transmission, but the correct and consistent use of latex condoms can greatly reduce a person’s risk.

The National College Health Assessment sponsored by the American College Health Association shows that only 49 percent of UGA undergraduates used a condom the last time they engaged in vaginal sex and only 1.3 percent the last time they engaged in oral sex.
