UGA students lead peer health education effort for Safe Spring Break

Athens, Ga. – The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), a group of undergraduate and graduate representatives to the University Health Center at the University of Georgia, will host a program to help students make healthy choices during their spring break. Safe Spring Break will be held on the second floor of the Student Learning Center on Tuesday, March 8, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Through Safe Spring Break, SHAC members will present information on sun safety, road trip safety and making responsible decisions.

Becky Arredondo, a graduate student from Blue Island, Ill., said that SHAC hopes to provide good advice to students looking forward to their break from classes.

“Anyone who is traveling this spring break should stop by and see what we have to offer,” said Arredondo. “Not only will we have information, we’ll also be giving away University Health Center Safe Spring Break kits throughout the night and telling students about all the resources available through the Health Center to help them stay healthy during and after spring break.”

The Safe Spring Break program is part of the In Sickness and In Health series, which Arredondo helped create as an outreach service of the University Health Center in the fall of 2004. Each month the series focuses on a different student-health issue. Previous topics have included women’s and sexual health, cold and flu prevention, finals stress relief, keeping New Year’s resolutions and healthy heart month.
