Documentary on Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek, “wild man of cultural theory,” to scree

Athens, Ga. – “ZIZEK!,” a full-length documentary about the eccentric life and esoteric work of Slovenian critic, theorist and philosopher Slavoj Zizek will screen at the University of Georgia on Friday, April 15, at 2 p.m. in room 148 of the Student Learning Center. The screening of the 80-minute film will be followed by a question-answer period with the director, Athens native Astra Taylor. This event is free and open to the public.

Zizek is arguably the most important cultural theorist today. The author of dozens of books and articles on subjects ranging from Hitchcock to Sept. 11, from Lenin to David Lynch, from Marxism to “The Matrix,” Zizek offers a unique blend of erudition and iconoclastic, compulsive commentary. His work has been translated into more than twenty languages. Reviewed in Le Monde and The New Yorker magazine, he has been called an “academic rock star” whose appearances in major cities result in overflowing lecture halls where thousands of fans come to catch a glimpse of the cerebral celebrity.

The movie captures the frenzy of fame as it follows Zizek on his travels around the world and in his home of Ljubljana, Slovenia. In the interviews, impromptu observations are combined with passages from Zizek’s main texts, giving viewers an entertaining overview of his work.

The film was made through generous support by the Canada Council for the Arts. “Zizek!” is a production of the New York City-based Documentary Campaign, a nonprofit organization for progressive politics and artistic filmmaking. The screening is sponsored by the UGA English department.
