Media Advisory: First Latino UGA doctoral graduate returns to inspire students of color

Athens, Ga. – The first Latino doctoral graduate from the Department of Political Science will be speaking to current students and the university community about his experiences as a graduate student of color at the University of Georgia. The open dialogue is Friday, Sept. 16 from 10:30 a.m. until noon in room 250 of the Student Learning Center.

Jonathan Benjamín-Alvarado, a 1998 graduate of the nationally ranked School of Public and International Affairs, is currently an associate professor of political science and assistant director of Latino/Latin American Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

As part of the UGA’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, Benjamín-Alvarado will be having an open dialogue with current and prospective students regarding his experiences as a student and the opportunities and challenges that he encountered on his road from B.A. to Ph.D. and beyond!

This event is free and open to the public Refreshments will be served.

The Latino Youth Leadership Program at the Fanning Institute is a statewide program for Latino youth with demonstrated leadership capabilities. This scholarship program is open to Latinas and Latinos between the ages of 15-19 who have an interest in becoming positive change agents in their local communities.
