UGA ceramics faculty member Sunkoo Yuh receives Joan Mitchell Foundation grant for sculpture

Athens, Ga. – Sunkoo Yuh, a faculty member in ceramics at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, has received a $25,000 grant in sculpture from the Joan Mitchell Foundation.

New to the art faculty this year, Yuh received an MFA in 1997 from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, which is widely considered the best ceramics program in the United States, according to Carmon Colangelo, director of the Lamar Dodd School of Art.

“Sunkoo is an amazing artist who pushes the limits of the ceramic medium in terms of scale and color,” says Colangelo. “He weaves ancient and modern cultures, humans and animals into lively narratives that explore universal themes of life, death, birth and nature. We are very fortunate he came to UGA.”

Yuh’s work is in the permanent collections of the Renwick Gallery at the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C.; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft; and the Oakland Museum of Art. He has had seven solo exhibitions since 1997 in addition to 30 national and 10 international exhibitions of his work in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston and San Diego among other cities. Yuh’s work has received multiple reviews in American Craft, Ceramic Monthly and Ceramics Art and Perception.

Established in memory of contemporary American artist Joan Mitchell in 1993, the Joan Mitchell Foundation seeks to demonstrate that painting and sculpture are significant cultural necessities by providing grants, stipends and scholarships for painters and sculptors. The foundation celebrates Mitchell’s legacy by encouraging the ambitions of developing artists. In 2003, UGA faculty members Jim Barsness and Radcliffe Bailey received grants in painting from the foundation.  For more information, visit http://fdncenter.org/grantmaker/joanmitchellfdn/index.html.

With more than 1,000 art majors, the faculty and staff are dedicated to providing the highest level of instruction in studio art, design, art education and art history.
