UGA’s Grady College Students win national Fox News competition

Athens, Ga. – Two students in the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication have been named winners of the second annual “Fox News Channel College Challenge.”

Broadcast news majors Ana Jackson and Dan Kinard will share a scholarship of $10,000 and Grady College will receive a matching grant of $10,000. In addition, the winning team receives an expenses-paid trip to New York City where they will appear Monday, April 24, on Fox News Channel’s Dayside program to talk about their winning entry. Dayside airs weekdays at 1 p.m.

Jackson and Kinard, both seniors in Grady’s Department of Telecommunications, won the “Fox News Channel College Challenge” for a three-minute in-depth look at the issues surrounding immigration, a piece they co-produced with the advice of Bob Furnad, visiting associate professor of telecommunications. Jackson was the reporter and writer of the piece and Kinard was the photographer.

Their award-winning entry featured scenes shot around Athens and at the state capitol in Atlanta. The two Grady students provided perspective on the immigration issue with interviews from variety of players including both an immigration advocate and opponent, an immigration attorney, a Latino day laborer, a U.S. congressman and state senator, an after-school program director, a volunteer border minuteman, an editor of a Latino newspaper and an elementary school student. The story aired on NewSource 15, a Grady College-produced newscast that reaches approximately 90,000 homes in Athens and surrounding counties.

Jackson, a 21-year-old Columbus, Ohio native, is minoring in political science and will graduate in May. Kinard, 22, plans to graduate in May with a double major in finance and broadcast news. The Tucker native has accepted a job with KPMG, an Atlanta accounting firm.

The 2005/2006 Fox News competition required teams of two to four students (juniors and seniors only) to research, write, produce and submit an objective broadcast news story selected from a list of provided topics. A panel from Fox News Channel, who are integral in the newsgathering, production and presentation of news programming, judged the entries.

The “Fox News Channel College Challenge” is a nationwide competition for undergraduate students majoring in journalism, broadcast journalism, communications or an equivalent.
