WUGA-FM wins national journalism award

Athens, Ga. – WUGA, 91.7/97.9 FM public radio for the Athens area, recently won first place for best commentary from Public Radio News Directors, Inc.

Athens free-lance writer Patricia Ready Mullen wrote and voiced a piece called “The Dark Side of Star Wars.” Mullen’s essay was an indictment of irresponsible media marketing targeted at children. Mullen received a bachelor of arts in journalism in 1986 and a master of arts in 1993, both from UGA.

The PRNDI awards competition is the only national contest that recognizes outstanding public radio news reporting at local stations. The awards were recently presented at the annual conference in Los Angeles.

WUGA won a total of seven national, regional, and state awards in the 2005 broadcast year including recognition from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press, and the Georgia Association of Broadcasters.
