Morehead to be interim vice president for instruction at UGA

Athens, Ga. – The position of vice president for instruction at the University of Georgia will be filled on an interim basis by Jere W. Morehead when Del Dunn retires in December.

Arnett C. Mace Jr., senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, announced that Morehead, currently vice provost for academic affairs, will hold the position while a national search is conducted to fill it permanently.

Morehead, a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor, has been a faculty member in the Terry College of Business legal studies department since 1986. He was appointed vice provost in August, 2004. He was associate provost and director of the university’s Honors Program and Foundation Fellows Program from 1999 to 2004.

Morehead also has served as acting executive director of legal affairs for the university and as a visiting faculty member at the University of Michigan. He is the faculty athletics representative for the University of Georgia.

“Vice Provost Morehead’s extensive experience, demonstrated leadership and commitment to instruction make him the ideal person to assume the interim vice president for instruction position,” said Mace. “I am confident that he will continue to provide outstanding leadership and service in this capacity.”

Dunn, who has been vice president since 2002, will retire effective Dec. 1, concluding nearly 40 years of service to UGA. He joined the political science faculty in 1967 and, except for a two-year leave, has never worked elsewhere.

Morehead and Dunn were co-chairs of the Task Force on General Education and Student Learning, which spent about a year studying ways to strengthen undergraduate education at UGA. The group’s report, issued last year, contains more than 40 recommendations, a number of which are now in place or are in the process of being implemented.

In 1997, Morehead was chair of another task force that focused on improving the quality of the undergraduate experience at UGA.

Morehead, who has taught Honors classes and seminars since joining the faculty, has received UGA’s highest teaching honors including the Josiah Meigs and Richard Russell teaching awards. He was twice chosen Outstanding Honors Professor and teacher of the year in the Terry College.

During the interim appointment, Morehead will continue to carry on some of his current duties including working with the Honors Program and the admissions office.
