Athens, Ga. - University of Georgia College of Education professor Billy Hawkins, whose research during the past decade has focused on sport and race, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Forum for the Scholarly Study of Intercollegiate Athletics in Higher Education.

Hawkins, a professor of sport management and policy in the department of kinesiology, will serve a three-year term on the board.

Hawkins co-edited a 2011 book titled Sport, Race, Activism, and Social Change: The Impact of Dr. Harry Edwards' Scholarship and Service.

He authored a 2010 book titled The New Plantation: Black Athletes, College Sports, and Predominantly White NCAA Institutions, which was named a 2010 Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Reviews.

Started under the sponsorship of the NCAA but editorially and philosophically independent, the purpose of the forum is to stimulate, encourage and promote study, research and writing related to intercollegiate athletics; to demonstrate the relevance of research for reform efforts in intercollegiate athletics; to support core values of higher education in relationship to intercollegiate sport; and to organize and conduct an annual scholarly colloquium that is held prior to the annual NCAA Convention. The Board also edits The Journal of Intercollegiate Sport, published by Human Kinetics.
