Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia College of Pharmacy will hold the 11th Annual Howard C. Ansel Symposium Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The symposium will focus on developments in the management of hyperlipidemia.

Patients with hyperlipidemia are at high risk of cardiovascular episodes, and pharmacists play a vital role in medication management of lipid therapy. The program is open to pharmacists who offer lipid therapy management or pharmacy technicians who wish to learn more about it.

The symposium will feature a morning session in “Advances in the Management of Hyperlipidemia,” a networking lunch and an afternoon session in the “Best Practices in the Management of Hyperlipidemia.”

The keynote address will be given by Dr. Jonathan Murrow, a cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine with the Georgia Regents University/UGA Medical Partnership. Trained as an invasive cardiologist, he teaches clinical medicine and cardiovascular physiology and conducts patient-oriented research on mechanisms of atherosclerosis, novel cell-based regenerative therapies for cardiovascular disease and measurement of vascular function in peripheral arterial disease.

Pharmacists can receive a continuing pharmacy education credit if they attend the symposium, participate in active learning and complete the activity evaluation.

The registration fee includes attendance, instructional materials, the CPE credit, continental breakfast and a boxed lunch. Every pharmacist who registers may also bring one pharmacy technician free of charge. For more information on the symposium, see https://www.rxugace.com/programs/details/874 or call 706-542-6232.

The Ansel Symposium was established to honor Howard C. Ansel, dean emeritus, for his notable contributions to pharmacy education and his ongoing support of the pharmacy profession. Ansel was dean of the College of Pharmacy from 1977 to 1991 and the college’s first Panoz Professor of Pharmacy. He joined the faculty in 1962 in the college’s former department of pharmaceutics after three years on the faculty of the University of Toledo, where he received his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in pharmaceutics from the University of Florida.
