Approximately 1,620 students eligible for degrees at UGA summer Commencement

An estimated 1,620 students will be eligible to receive degrees at the University of Georgia’s summer Commencement exercises Aug. 6 at 9:30 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum.

The exercises are a combined ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students who complete degree requirements at the end of summer semester. Approximately 849 candidates for bachelor’s degrees and 771 candidates for doctoral, master’s and specialist in education degrees are anticipated to be eligible to participate in the ceremony. Final numbers will be available at the conclusion of final exams on Aug. 5.

Dennis P. Lockhart, the current president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, will be the Commencement speaker. Lockhart has served in this position since March 1, 2007. In his role, he is responsible for all of the bank’s activities, including monetary policy, bank supervision and regulation, and payment services. In addition, he is on the Federal Reserve’s chief monetary policy body, the Federal Open Market Committee. The bank serves the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which covers Alabama, Florida and Georgia, and portions of Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Lockhart’s 40-year career spans international borders and encompasses numerous professional and civic experiences. A native of California, Lockhart earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Stanford University and a master’s degree in international economics and American foreign policy from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. He was an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from 1968 to 1974.

Undergraduates and graduates will assemble at the entrance of the Coliseum Training Facility Smith St. Lobby (across from Carlton Street Parking Deck entrance).Only undergraduates, graduates and faculty in cap and gown or credentialed UGA staff will be allowed in the Coliseum Training Facility

The ceremony will be broadcast live on channel 15 of the university and Charter cable systems.
