Archaeologist from University of Oregon to speak on UGA campus

Athens, Ga. – Doug Kennett, an archaeologist from the University of Oregon, will deliver a lecture on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 4 p.m. in room 264 of Baldwin Hall on the University of Georgia campus.

His talk is entitled, “Ideal Free Settlement on California’s Northern Channel Islands” and is open free to the public. Kennett applies human behavioral ecology and GIS/spatial modeling to understand prehistoric settlement patterns in coastal California and more recently in Europe.

Kennett studies prehistoric maritime societies of the Pacific and Pacific Rim. He has done field research in California, Mexico, Oceania and Peru and currently has had active field projects in Chiapas, Mexico and Rapa, French Polynesia.

His interests include evolutionary and ecological approaches to hunter-gatherers and agriculturalists, particularly the behavioral ecology of prehistoric coastal foragers and farmers.

He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers and has received grants from the National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society and the National Park Service to conduct his research. He is co-editor with Bruce Winterhalder from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill of the book Behavioral Ecology and the Transition to Agriculture, published by the University of California Press in 2006.
