Artist to lecture, perform on global water crisis

Athens, Ga. - The University of Georgia Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the Lamar Dodd School of Art will present a public lecture by B. Stephen Carpenter II on artistic intervention, curriculum and public pedagogy Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. in room S151 of the school of art.
Carpenter's visit to UGA will include a public performance and workshop on "Collaborative Creative Resistance" Feb. 19 at noon at the west entrance of the school of art. Both the lecture and the workshop will explore Carpenter's argument that the global water crisis demands creative interdisciplinary responses in the form of artistic, curricular and pedagogical interventions that raise awareness, engage research and take action.
Carpenter, the founding director of Reservoir Studio: Transdisciplinary Underground Collective, is a professor of art education at Penn State. The lecture, part of the Franklin Visiting Scholars series, is free and open to the public.
Using clay, sawdust, water and other recycled materials, Carpenter's performance will demonstrate the production of ceramic water filters made of clay and sawdust. Carpenter has conducted similar presentations at universities in Wisconsin, Texas and California.
"Dr. Carpenter's work embodies the interdisciplinarity that continues to both characterize and energize the field of art education, but it also extends these intersections in ways that compel us to further consider the creative and intellectual practices that we share with the world," said Christopher Schulte, assistant professor of art education in the school of art. "His work on art practice as creative intervention significantly strengthens our individual and collective engagements with social justice and equality today."
The Franklin Visiting Scholars program brings to the UGA campus outstanding scholars who are also diversity champions and leaders on their campuses and in their disciplines. The program assists units in developing diverse professional networks for both faculty and graduate student recruitment, development and retention; informs units about effective discipline-based strategies for creating a climate for diversity and inclusion; and assists in developing new collaborations.
