Athens, Ga. – Stuart Horodner, artistic director of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, will visit the University of Georgia as a guest critic at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, where he will discuss artwork with graduate students and give a lecture at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The lecture, in room S101 of the art school, is free and the public is invited to attend.
A long-time curator, gallery director and former owner of the Horodner Romley Gallery in New York, Horodner will discuss a variety of work with students, touching on questions of concept, use of materials, scale, titling, relationship to audience and potential placement in galleries and exhibitions that transcend a regional context. The lecture and discussion will focus on elements of the gallery setting that students develop outside of school, including peers, networking and role models.
“Art students today are challenged to make and present work that develops a context for their career success,” said Georgia Strange, director of the art school. “We are fortunate to have a guest critic of Stuart Horodner’s experience on campus to share his insights on our students’ work, as well as some of the ways they might navigate the world of artistic vision and professional success.”
Prior to moving to Atlanta, Horodner has been curator of Portland Institute for Contemporary Art in Oregon and director of the Bucknell University Art Gallery in Lewisburg, Pa. He has contributed to publications including Art Lies, Art Issues, Art on Paper, BOMB, Dazed & Confused and Surface.
