Athens, Ga. - Emily Bazelon, a senior editor at Slate and author of "Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy," will speak at the Safe and Welcoming Schools Conference hosted by the University of Georgia College of Education at the Gwinnett campus on March 1.

Bazelon, who is also a contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine and the Truman Capote Fellow at Yale University Law School, has been recently featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, "The Colbert Report" and National Public Radio's "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross. Before joining Slate, she worked as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Each conference participant will receive a copy of her book.

The one-day conference is designed to help education administrators, counselors and teachers use free and low-cost resources to prevent childhood bullying.

UGA researchers and practitioners from the fields of education, counseling, law and public health will provide information on using a wealth of resources, including websites, videos, books and surveys. Presentations will be interactive, with hands-on demonstrations of how to use these resources. Participants will receive a compendium of the highlighted resources to assist in their own bullying prevention and intervention efforts.

The registration cost is $149, which includes conference materials, lunch, two refreshment breaks and a copy of Bazelon's book. The deadline for registration is Feb. 26. For more details and online registration see www.coe.uga.edu/events/.
