Athens, Ga. – Beth Bailey, a veteran legal adviser at the University of Georgia, has been named interim executive director of the university’s Office of Legal Affairs.
The appointment, announced by President-elect Jere Morehead, is effective July 1.
“With significant experience in higher education law, Beth is well prepared to lead the Office of Legal Affairs during this transition period,” Morehead said. “I appreciate her service and know that the university will be represented capably under her leadership.”
Bailey joined the Office of Legal Affairs in 1994 as a legal research associate and has served as associate director for legal affairs since 1997. As associate director, she advises campus units on legal, policy and liability issues. She is responsible for environmental, health and human safety matters, provides litigation support to the State Law Department in cases involving the university and serves as the administrator of the university’s Compliance, Ethics and Reporting Hotline. She also conducts training for members of the university community in areas of employment law and university policies and procedures. In addition, she reviews and drafts policies affecting the university.
Prior to joining the Office of Legal Affairs, Bailey was an attorney at Kennerly, Montgomery and Finley in Knoxville, Tenn., and clerked in the Office of the Attorney General for the State of Tennessee.
Bailey earned her law degree and bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the National Association of College and University Attorneys.
The UGA Office of Legal Affairs provides legal advice, assistance, education and training to administrators, faculty, staff and students on behalf of the university. The Office of Legal Affairs also assists the campus community by providing a variety of training as well as programs and presentations addressing legal issues that arise in the context of higher education.
