Athens, Ga. – A senior administrator at the University of Georgia will assume a new role, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Jere Morehead announced today.
Bob Boehmer, who has served as associate provost for institutional effectiveness and extended campuses, has been named associate provost for academic planning by Morehead. In this new role, Boehmer will continue to be responsible for the university’s accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and to oversee the university’s institutional assessment processes and the Office of Institutional Research. In addition, he will assume responsibility for implementation of the university’s strategic plan.
UGA’s current strategic plan was adopted in 2001. William Vencill, a faculty member in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences who served as an Administrative Fellow in the provost’s office, has been directing a university-wide process to adopt a new strategic plan for 2010-2020 later this year.
“The university owes a large debt of gratitude to Dr. Vencill for his leadership and vision in the strategic planning process,” Morehead said. “Following adoption of the strategic plan, significant and sustained efforts will be required to develop an implementation plan and to integrate the new plan into the annual budgeting process. Professor Boehmer will assume responsibility for that next phase of the process, as well as oversight of the upcoming SACS reaffirmation process.”
Since 2002, Boehmer also has been responsible for oversight of the academic programs at UGA’s extended campuses. During that time, bachelor’s degree-completion programs and graduate programs were launched at the Griffin Campus and a new student learning center was constructed there. The Gwinnett Campus relocated in 2008 to a new building on Sever Road in Lawrenceville, where a wide variety of graduate degree programs are offered, as well as continuing education courses for professional development.
Boehmer will work with Laura Jolly, interim vice president for instruction and dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, to develop a plan to transfer oversight of those campuses to the vice president for instruction. The transfer will be completed over the next several months.
“Professor Boehmer has provided extraordinary leadership in the development of our extended campuses,” Morehead said. “As his role changes, I believe it is important to place the responsibility for the extended campuses in the Office of the Vice President for Instruction. That office will be charged with developing sound academic plans to continue the growth of the extended campuses as a part of the university’s mission to provide extended educational opportunities to Georgia citizens.”
