Athens, Ga. – Author Cathy Bao Bean will present “Living and Laughing by the Chopsticks-Fork Principle: A Talk on Being At Least Bicultural” on Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. in the Tate Student Center Theatre. The talk is free for the university community.

Bao Bean is author of “The Chopsticks-Fork Principle: A Memoir and Manual,” the story of her life in a bicultural family and how she reconciled the conflicting expectations of her blended family and society at large.

In her autobiographical lecture, she will touch upon issues of race, class and gender as she shares the story of adapting to American life as a young Chinese immigrant and raising a child to appreciate his duel heritage.

“In her efforts to shatter stereotypes, Cathy Bao Bean challenges us to realize that we are all ‘at least bicultural,'” said Alyssa Pel, president of the Asian American Student Association. “It is rare to have Asian-identified speakers at UGA, so I’m excited to see what she has in store for us.”

The lecture is co-sponsored by the Asian American Student Association, Multicultural Services and Programs, International Student Life, UGA International Ambassadors, the Office of International Education and the Chinese Undergraduate Student Association.

Multicultural Services and Programs and International Student Life are departments within UGA Student Affairs.
