Athens, Ga. - Emily Lembeck, superintendent of Marietta City Schools and an alumna of the University of Georgia College of Education, has been named the 2012 Georgia Superintendent of the Year by the Georgia School Superintendents Association.

Lembeck, who received her Ed.D. in educational administration in 1995, has been a finalist for the award for the past three years.

"I feel very fortunate to be recognized for work that I love. This is very much an honor to be shared with the great educators and support staff in all of our schools and departments," said Lembeck. "As the 2012 Georgia Superintendent of the Year, I will proudly represent all my colleagues, as well as quality public education in Georgia. We are moving forward at a time of unprecedented challenge and change, with our state and nation depending on the progress we make."

Lembeck will be recognized among the other state representatives in Houston this February at the American Association of School Administrators National Conference. She also receives a ring commemorating the honor, her expenses paid to the National Conference on Education in which a breakfast will be held in her honor and $1,000 to present as a scholarship to a 2012 Marietta High School graduate.

She received the College of Education's 2011 Professional Achievement Award, given to alumni in the midpoint of their careers who have demonstrated significant achievements in their fields. She has served in the college's Superintendents' Education Policy Advisory Group since 2007 and participated in the Fulbright German-American Superintendent Seminar in 2004.

She is a member of the GSSA Board of Directors, a past chair of the Metro RESA Board of Control and was recently elected to represent Georgia as a member of the Governing Board of AASA.

Classworks, Inc. is the official GSSA sponsor of the Superintendent of the Year program.
