Conference on Southeastern Indians to be held on UGA campus Feb. 19-20

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia will be the site of a major conference sponsored by the Institute for Native American Studies on Feb. 19-20.

“Southeastern Indians through Time: Land, Environment, and Geography” will draw experts from all over the country to events which will be held in room 117 Visual Arts and open free to the public.

There will be four panels along with a film presentation of the documentary The Trail of Tears, which was shown as part of theAmerican Experience series on PBS. Jace Weaver, director of the INAS, was an advisor on the series.

The conference will begin on Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. Panels during the day will cover such topics as “Cherokee Government in Transition,” “Restoring Indigenous Agriculture to the American Southeast” and “Finding the Rosebuds: Historical Reconstruction and the Cherokee Female Seminary.”

From 5-7 p.m. there will be a reception and exhibit in the Circle Gallery in Caldwell Hall.

On Saturday, Feb. 20, beginning at 9 a.m. there will be a screening of The Trail of Tears, with discussion by the film’s maker, Chris Eyre and Jack Baker, the national president of the Trail of Tears Association. Another panel will follow later in the day.
