UGA counseling professor receives 2011 APA Public Interest Award

Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia counseling psychology professor Edward Delgado-Romero has received the American Psychology Association 2011 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest, one of only six awards given by the 100,000-member organization.

In addition, as a recipient of the early career award (within 15 years of graduation), Delgado-Romero will present an address at the annual APA convention in Washington, D.C. in August and write an article for the field’s top journal, American Psychologist.

Delgado-Romero is a professor in the UGA College of Education department of counseling and human development services.

“Delgado-Romero’s research and scholarship are considered essential to the development of psychology professionals,” wrote Lisa Flores, an associate professor in educational, school and counseling psychology at the University of Missouri, in a nominating letter. “His research has addressed racial/ethnic issues in psychology and has applied multicultural psychology to clinical practice. He has numerous publications in these areas, with 25 journal articles, 27 book chapters, and a co-edited book. Several of his publications have been published in highly prestigious outlets in psychology, such as The Counseling Psychologist and the Journal of Counseling Psychology.”

Delgado-Romero has won numerous awards throughout his career. Since joining the UGA faculty in 2005, he has been named a fellow of the APA in two divisions (Society of Counseling Psychology and Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues), been elected president of the National Latino Psychological Association and twice named Faculty Member of the Year by the Counseling Psychology Student Association from 2006 – 2008. He received the Distinguished Early Career Award from the National Latino Psychological Association in 2006 and the Emerging Professional Award from Division 45 in 2006.He is a charter member and mentor of Psi Alpha Omega, the National Honor Society in Psychology for Students of Color and those interested in the study of ethnic and cultural issues.

Delgado-Romero teaches advanced theories, internship and advanced multicultural counseling in the counseling psychology doctoral program. He is a licensed psychologist in Georgia.

His research interests are in multicultural psychology, Latino psychology, race and ethnicity, faculty of color retention and multicultural competence. He is a member of several editorial boards, including The Counseling Psychologist, the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, the Journal of Hispanic Higher Education and a Spanish language journal from Colombia, South America.

He received his Ph.D. and master’s degree in counseling psychology from the University of Notre Dame.He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. Before coming to UGA, Delgado-Romero was a faculty member at the University of Florida and Indiana University.
