Athens, Ga. - The planning committee for the MLK Freedom Breakfast has announced the date for the 2012 event. With the theme "The Power of the Dream: Moving Forward with a Shared Vision," the ninth annual breakfast will be held Jan. 13 at 7:30 a.m. in the Grand Hall of the University of Georgia Tate Student Center. The speaker will be announced at a later time.

Sponsored by the University of Georgia, the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government and the Clarke County School District, the event commemorates the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year at the breakfast, recipients of the President's Fulfilling the Dream award are recognized. These awards highlight the work of local citizens who have made significant efforts to build bridges of unity and understanding as they strive to make King's dream of equality and justice a reality.

In determining recipients, the awards committee considers each applicant's:
1. significant contributions to the advancement of social justice, human rights and/or race relations;
2. promotion of King's example of volunteerism and civic engagement to address critical community issues;
3. utilization of King's philosophy to reduce tensions, resolve conflict and foster goodwill; and,
4. demonstrated effort to use King's teachings to build bridges of understanding and unity.

Nomination forms may be acquired by contacting UGA's Office of Diversity (diversity@uga.edu) or via the website (www.uga.edu/diversity). Nominators should describe the nominee's contributions in regard to the selection criteria and provide one additional letter of recommendation. All documents must be submitted no later than Nov. 18 to:
