Athens, Ga. - Dedication ceremonies will be held Aug. 26 for the new student learning center on the University of Georgia Griffin Campus.

Speakers for the event, which will begin at 10 a.m., include UGA President Michael F. Adams; Dick Morrow, mayor of Griffin; Edward Goss Jr., chairman of the Spalding County Board of Commissioners; and Trent Tate, a current student at the Griffin Campus.

Tate, who is scheduled to graduate in December, is majoring in environmental resource science, one of the seven undergraduate degree options offered at the Griffin Campus.

Other bachelor's degree programs include agribusiness, biological science, consumer economics, general business, microbiology and special education.

Graduate degree programs also are offered in agricultural leadership and mathematics education.

The 33,000-square-foot student learning center was funded in large part through a $10 million special purpose local option sales tax overwhelming approved by Spalding County voters in November 2005.The groundbreaking for the facility was held in August 2007.The building is now open for fall semester classes.

"The student learning center represents a unique partnership between the local community, the state of Georgia and UGA to enhance access to UGA degrees," said Bob Boehmer, who has overall responsibility for the academic programs at UGA's extended campuses."It provides a solid foundation for steady long-term growth in the number of students and degree programs offered on the Griffin Campus."

Following the dedication ceremony, a reception will be held inside the student learning center and guests will be welcome to tour the facility.
