Digital library adds historical south Georgia newspapers to archives

Athens, Ga. – Historic newspapers from four south Georgia cities are now available online at the Digital Library of Georgia. Consisting of more than 81,000 newspaper pages, the archive provides access to the historical records through a system that is full-text searchable and can be browsed by date.

The South Georgia Historic Newspapers Archive (http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/sgnewspapers) provides online access to six newspaper titles published in Albany, Americus, Thomasville and Valdosta from 1845 to 1922. They are the Albany News (1870-1883), Albany Patriot (1845-1866), Americus Times Recorder (1881-1921), Sumter Republican (1870-1885), Thomasville Times Enterprise (1873-1922) and Valdosta Times (1908-1912).

“We will add additional titles from the region in coming months,” said P. Toby Graham, deputy university librarian and DLG director.

The South Georgia Historic Newspapers Archive is a project of the Digital Library of Georgia and is part of the Georgia HomePLACE (Providing Library and Archives Collections Electronically) initiative. The project is supported with federal Library Services and Technology Act funds administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Georgia Public Library Service, a unit of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.

Other newspaper archives available through the Digital Library of Georgia include the Atlanta Historic Newspapers (1847-1922), Macon Telegraph (1826-1908), Athens Historic Newspapers (1827-1922), Columbus Enquirer (1828-1890), Milledgeville Historic Newspapers (1808-1920), Southern Israelite (1929-1986) and Red and Black (1893-2006).
