Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Office of Academic Special Programs recently sponsored the District I History Day Competition. Using the theme, “Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences,”individual and group projects included papers, documentaries, websites, exhibits, and performances. More than 70 sixth- through twelfth -grade students and teachers representing 32 counties in Georgia, participated in the annual competition.
Ian Cundiff of Gainesville, a student at Da Vinci Academy, was named Junior Division, District Ioverall winner and first place winner in the Junior Individual Paper category for ” The Manhattan Project: Scientists Working Together for a Common Goal.”
Kessler Barlow of Suwanee and Ryan Sterritt of Lawrenceville, both students at Collins Hill High School, were named Senior Division, District I overall winners and first place winners in the Senior Group Exhibit category for “Nuremberg Trials: Debating Punishment for War Crimes.”
Cundiff, Barlow, and Sterritt, along with participants who placed first, second and third in other categories, will advance to the state contest for National History Day in Georgia on April 30 at Macon State College. At each level of competition, participants are recognized through certificates, medals or monetary awards.
The competition was sponsored by the UGA Office of Academic Special Programs and the Georgia Humanities Council.
