EITS to offer free computer security checkups

Athens, Ga. - The University of Georgia Enterprise Information Technology Services will host its spring Computer Health and Security Fair April 3 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the second floor lobby of the Miller Learning Center. UGA students, faculty and staff are invited to bring their personal laptops for a free security checkup.
At the event, technical volunteers will ensure that computer firewalls are enabled and antivirus and operating systems are up to date. Computers also will be checked for other problems including slow performance, web browser pop-ups and unknown error messages.
"We provide free virus and malware removal, security consultations and check-ups to ensure their computer is using the latest and most secure software and plugins," said Justin Williams, EITS Help Desk manager. "Our purpose is to promote safe computer usage across the university campus."
Participants will also learn the best practices for securing their computers against intrusions, virus infections and account compromises, Williams said.
University department-issued computers will not be checked at the fair.
