Athens, Ga. - University of Georgia Food Services has received a gold Loyal E. Horton Dining Award for residential dining concepts and honorable mention for catering-online menu from the National Association of College and University Food Services.

Named for a NACUFS founder, past president and innovator, the Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards celebrate exemplary menus, presentations, special event planning and new dining concepts, and provide an avenue for sharing ideas and creative presentation in campus dining services.

Colleges and universities across the nation compete for Horton awards in the categories of residential dining concepts, residential dining-special events, retail sales-single concept, retail sales-multiple concepts/marketplace, catering-special event, and catering-online menu. Competing schools are classified based on institution size and may enter any of the categories. Gold winners in each category advance to compete for the grand prize.

The category of residential dining concepts evaluates all-you-care-to-eat facilities and a food service program's ability to bring creativity, atmosphere, nutritional quality, and variety into their menu, presentation, marketing, and nutrition and wellness. "By entering the residential dining concepts award, our entire meal plan program was judged on a national level. So, to win gold in this category is a great honor for our program at UGA," said J. Michael Floyd, executive director of UGA Food Services.

University of Georgia Food Services has participated in the Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards program for 25 years, receiving a national record of 68 Horton awards since 1987. The department will be recognized at a luncheon during the NACUFS national conference in July in which the announcement of the Grand Prize winner will be made.
