Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Office of Student Academic Services for the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences will hold an open house celebration for its new location in Memorial Hall on Sept. 9, from 2 to 5 p.m.
The event is in 114 Memorial Hall, and Franklin College students, faculty and staff are invited. The office, which includes the Office of Academic Advising, had been located for some years in New College, which is now undergoing renovations. The open house also celebrates the office’s 30th anniversary.
The event will include remarks by Dean Garnett S. Stokes of the Franklin College and performances by students in the fine and performing arts.
“There also will be refreshments and tours of the renovated space,” said Michelle Garfield Cook, associate dean of the Franklin College in charge of student affairs.
Before 1979, all student advising was done by faculty advisers, but then Franklin College Dean Jack Payne started the Office of Academic Advising. This decision was in line with a national movement to hire professionals for college advising. The National Academic Advising Association was established in 1977.
