Athens, Ga. – The Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries honored Annelies Mondi, deputy director of the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia, with the Museum Professional of the Year Award for 2009. GAMG presented Mondi with the award at its 2009 annual conference in Marietta recently.
Each year, GAMG recognizes a Georgia museum or gallery employee involved on the local, state and national level who demonstrates leadership in the profession and works to promote the goals of GAMG. These goals include the growth and improvement of museums and galleries as well as the stimulation of public interest, support and understanding of those institutions.
As deputy director of the museum, Mondi “has met the challenges of that position in superb fashion,” said William U. Eiland, director of the Georgia Museum of Art, who nominated Mondi for the award.
Mondi began working at the museum in 1988 as assistant preparator, moving to the registration department the following year and becoming head registrar in 2001. She was appointed deputy director of the museum in 2004.
Mondi’s résumé includes much more than her involvement at the museum. She is on the registrars’ committee of the American Association of Museums and a member of the Association of American College and University Museums and Galleries. Mondi is also head of development for the Southeastern Registrars Association, after chairing the group from 2002 to 2004. She has been a site visitor and member of the visual arts panel of the Georgia Council for the Arts, a speaker at the Georgia Society of Archivists, a speaker and mentor for the Northeast Georgia Council of Girl Scouts, an instructor for Literacy Action and a juror for the 9th Congressional District High School Art Competition and has managed logistics and volunteers for the mental health benefit art auction held in Athens.
“The above list is by no means exhaustive of Mondi’s achievements as a museum professional, both within her role at GMOA and in a wider context,” Eiland said. “The GAMG award, of which she is entirely deserving and which is long overdue, should recognize and honor Annelies Mondi for her quiet commitment to making the Georgia Museum of Art and other museums in our state as excellent as possible.”
