Athens, Ga. - The Collectors group from the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will host its annual fundraiser May 18 at the museum.

This year's theme for the event, which includes a seated dinner and a silent auction, is the Seven Deadly Sins. Both the décor, including flowers by Magdalena Williams of European Floral Design, and the menu will reflect the idea of decadence. Each of the sins has inspired the offerings of the multi-course dinner catered by Epting Events.

The evening will begin with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by a silent auction from 6:30-7:30 p.m., during which attendees can bid on a wide range of items. Dinner will complete the event, which is being chaired by Judith Ellis, with assistance from Carol Dolson and Betty Myrtle, chair of the Collectors.

"This year includes the best and most varied selection of auction items ever," said Myrtle, "from American cut glass to oil paintings, vacation homes, silver pieces and gourmet dinners."

SunTrust Bank has contributed tickets to Atlanta Braves games and the Georgia Aquarium, and Faye Chambers of Atlanta has donated a number of designer handbags and shoes, which are some of the more coveted objects up for sale. Artistic offerings are a part of the auction as well, and this year, some of the offering will include a work by Alan Campbell and a limited-edition signed lithograph by Alvar Suñol. Other highlights are a sterling silver necklace donated by Aurum Studios and a sapphire and diamond pendant from an anonymous donor. All proceeds from the auction and ticket sales will fund acquisitions by the museum.

Tickets are $75 per person/$150 per couple for members of the Collectors and $85 per person/$170 per couple for non-members. Reservations for the event will be accepted through May 10 and can be made by calling 706/542-GMOA (4662).

The Collectors is a higher-level GMOA membership that includes exclusive invitations to events focusing on collecting art, educational articles related to collecting and special travel opportunities related to art. The Collectors support the museum in raising funds to continue adding to its extensive collection and in recent years have helped GMOA purchase iconic pieces of Georgia silver and Charles Bird King's "Portrait of William Harris Crawford," which occupies a prominent place in the permanent collection galleries. Information regarding a Collector's membership can be obtained by contacting the museum.
