Israeli engineering dean to speak on international water solutions at UGA

Athens, Ga. – Noah I. Galil, dean of the faculty of civil and environmental engineering at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, will address “Advanced Israeli Water Solutions: Israel as a Pilot, Solving Water Problems for the World” on Aug. 26 at 10:30 a.m. in the University of Georgia College of Engineering’s Driftmier Auditorium. The public is invited to attend.

A noted expert in wastewater treatment technologies and reuse, Galil will share his expertise in the field of water conservation, offer insight on Israel’s contributions to the field, encourage academic collaboration and promote Israel’s upcoming water exhibition and conference, WATEC Israel 2013.

According to Galil, the Israeli water market is internationally recognized as highly developed, having benefited from many years of experience in managing scarce water resources.

“Already half of the water consumption for urban supply in Israel comes from seawater desalination, and it is about to double in the next three years,” Galil said. “Almost 80 percent of the municipal wastewater is treated and reused for irrigation. The Israeli export in water technologies exceeded $2 billion (U.S. dollars) in 2011 and is expected to rapidly increase and become an engine of growth for the Israeli economy.

“Israeli scientists strongly believe that innovation and implementation of water technologies will make water an efficient tool to achieve peace in the Middle East and contribute to addressing water problems in a thirsty world.”
