Athens, Ga. – Juana María Rodríguez, professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of California, Berkeley, will deliver the 21st annual Andrea Carson Coley Lecture at the University of Georgia on April 10 at 12:30 p.m. in the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries.

Rodríguez’s lecture, “Sexual Affects: Visualizing Pleasure, Troubling Politics” will follow a reception honoring the Coley family at 11:30 a.m. The lecture and reception are open to the public.

In addition to her appointment in the gender and women’s studies department, Rodríguez is affiliated faculty with the department of theater, dance and performance studies; the Berkeley Center for New Media; the Center for Race and Gender; and the Center for the Study of Sexual Cultures. She is one of the founding members of the Haas Institute’s Center for a Fair and Inclusive Society’s LGBTQ Citizen Cluster and currently serves on the UC Berkeley President’s Advisory Council on LGBT Students, Faculty and Staff.

She is the author of two books, “Queer Latinidad: Identity Practices, Discursive Spaces” (NYU Press, 2003) and “Sexual Futures, Queer Gestures, and Other Latina Longings” (NYU Press, 2014) and has published numerous articles related to her research interests in sexuality studies, queer activism in a transnational American context, critical race theory, technology and media arts and Latina and Caribbean studies.

The Andrea Carson Coley Lecture, hosted by the UGA Institute for Women’s Studies, was endowed through a donation from Andrew and Kathy Coley in memory of their daughter, Andrea Carson Coley (1972-1993), who was a certificate candidate in women’s studies. Each spring, the lecture brings scholars conducting cutting-edge research in lesbian and gay studies to campus.

This year’s lecture is co-sponsored by the LGBT Resource Center.
