Kris Gutiérrez, expert in literacy, bi-literacy and urban education, to speak in CLASE lecture series March 6

Athens, Ga. — Kris D. Gutiérrez, a professor of social research methodology in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles, will speak at the University of Georgia College of Education on Thursday, March 6.

Gutiérrez, an expert in literacy, culture and learning, will deliver a lecture titled, “Re-mediation, Sociocritical Literacies and Third Spaces,” as part of the Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education (CLASE) Lecture Series in Room G-23 in Aderhold Hall at noon.

Gutiérrez, director of the Center for the Study of Urban Literacies at UCLA, examines the relationship between literacy, culture and learning and investigates how students appropriate cultural concepts. Her long-term ethnographic studies in Los Angeles schools have explored the social organization of formal and non-formal learning environments, the effects of new forms of mediation on student and teacher learning, the effects of new policies and reform initiatives on English learners and their schooling practices and reading and writing development in elementary and secondary aged students, including students from migrant farm worker backgrounds.

Gutiérrez also directs the education studies minor at UCLA and the UCLA Migrant Scholars Leadership Program, a residential summer academic program for high school students from migrant farm worker families. A prolific writer and researcher, her articles have been published in journals such as Educational Researcher, Human Development, Reading Research Quarterly and the Harvard Educational Review.

She received the 2005 American Education Research Association Division C Sylvia Scribner Award, is a past Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences and has won multiple awards for her excellence in mentoring and teaching. Gutiérrez joined the UCLA faculty after completing her Ph.D. in English curriculum and instruction at the University of Colorado in 1987.

CLASE is an educational research and development center at UGA that provides professional development and resources for K-12 educators working with Latinos state-wide, outreach support through mentoring/tutoring of Latino students placed at risk, program support in developing a pipeline to post-secondary education for Latino students and research to inform teachers and educators on ways to reduce the achievement gap for Latino children, especially in Georgia.

The presentation is free and open to the public; however, to insure appropriate seating please RSVP to Sandy Smith, sandys@uga.edu by March 1.
