Athens, Ga. - Local artist and University of Georgia faculty member Jamie Calkin is helping the College of Education recognize its centennial year with an exhibition of his original watercolor paintings in the college's Office of Information Technology.

The "Celebration" exhibit, which features a rotation of new paintings of Aderhold Hall, UGA's campus and downtown Athens, is available for viewing in room 232 of Aderhold Hall through August 2009.

Calkin began painting in 1996 as a graduate student at North Carolina State University. He began selling his paintings in 2000 after two years teaching high school in Oglethorpe County. He earned his doctorate in science education from UGA in 2005. During his study at UGA, drawing and painting began to move its way into Calkin's professional life as a research tool and alternative method of teaching and learning. His dissertation focused on using visual arts to teach elementary science through arts-based narrative inquiry.

Calkin is a part-time assistant professor in the department of mathematics and science education. More information about Calkin and his artwork can be found at www.jamiecalkin.com.
