Athens, Ga. – Following a national search, Larry Malota has been named associate chief information officer and banner project coordinator for the University of Georgia Enterprise Information Technology Services office. Malota’s appointment will be effective Feb. 1.

Previous to his appointment at UGA, Malota served as associate director for enterprise information systems at Texas A&M University.

“Throughout his career at Texas A&M University, Larry has consistently proven himself to be one of the most trusted leaders in information technology,” said Timothy M. Chester, UGA chief information officer. “This reputation is due to two of his most important traits: First, he simply does what he says that he can or will do. Second, when supporting functional areas, Larry has a well-deserved reputation for doing so on the basis of what best serves the needs of the functional teams.”

As associate chief information officer, Malota will provide overall leadership for development and implementation of Banner, the new student information system, and support for systems such as DegreeWorks. Post-implementation of Banner, he will oversee all EITS teams who provide upkeep for academic information systems.

“Larry has a proven record of leadership in implementing and sustaining a student and financial aid information system at a large land-grant institution,” said Laura Jolly, UGA vice president for instruction. “His wealth of experience and collaborative approach to working with functional units across the campus will be an asset to UGA.”

Chester agreed. “I know that UGA will benefit from Larry’s tireless support of our functional areas in the coming years,” he said.

At Texas A&M, Malota was the associate director-technical lead responsible for directing the efforts of more than 30 team members in support of the Banner Student Information System. With more than 27 years of experience in higher education and student information systems, he will provide perspective on the benefits of an integrated student information system, including data integration, ease of data access and decision support capabilities.

Malota earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Texas A&M University in 1977 and 1986, respectively.
