Media Advisory: Georgia Daze program to let high school students experience UGA student life

Athens. Ga. – Fifty college-bound high school students will experience university life Feb.1-3 on the University of Georgia campus as part of the student-founded Georgia Daze program.

Georgia Daze pairs high schoolers from historically underrepresented populations with UGA students in an effort to showcase the reality of the Bulldog student experience.

“A lot of students hear so many things in the media and have all these ideas about what the university experience is, especially as a minority student, that they don’t get a real idea about what it’s like to come here,” said J. Paige Jackson, planning director for the event and UGA senior.

The high school students, who hail from across the state, stay in residence halls, eat lunch in the dining halls and attend classes with their hosts. In addition, the program schedules academic and student activity information sessions where the campus guests can ask questions to students, staff and faculty members.

“The hosts play a big part, being able to interact with one student for that long,” Jackson said. “We stress they should give the students a very honest overview of the university, I think that helps a lot.”

Since its inception in 2004, about 85 percent of program participants have enrolled at the university, Jackson said.
