Athens, Ga. -- Michael Thurmond, the former Labor Commissioner for the State of Georgia, will be the featured speaker at the University of Georgia School of Social Work's annual Policy Day Nov. 8. Thurmond's address will take place at 11 a.m. in the Tate Student Center Reception Hall.

Policy Day events run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Tate Student Center Reception Hall. Throughout the day, there will be student and faculty panels on unemployment and job issues, presentations from community agencies, and displays of student posters covering a vast array of domestic and international policies. Attendees will be served a "poor person's" breakfast and lunch. All events are free and open to the public.

Professor June Gary Hopps and her students, who plan and host Policy Day each year, have as their goal to highlight the impact of social policy with the annual event. Past speakers include Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, granddaughter of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and June Hopkins, Ph.D., granddaughter of Harry Hopkins, the chief architect of Roosevelt's New Deal. Invited speakers discuss policies and other macro issues affecting Americans.
