New UGA ceramics building open house set for Friday, Nov. 5

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art will hold an open house to celebrate its new ceramics building Friday, Nov. 5 at 3:30 p.m. Visitors, students, faculty and staff are invited to see and tour the new facility, located at 190 River Road, adjacent to University Printing.

A companion to the 216,000 square-foot Lamar Dodd School of Art completed in 2008, the new 15,500 square-foot ceramics building will house indoor and outdoor kilns, faculty studios, classrooms, a lecture space and storage facilities for student work and materials. The new building utilizes innovative materials and new infrastructure elements, including a Variable Refrigerant Volume HVAC system, which allows building users to modulate individual room temperatures through directional diffusers and isolated controls. The building features operable windows and central corridors large enough to accommodate a forklift and the volume of clay and glazing material required by the discipline.

“UGA will open a top-tier academic facility that houses high-end studio laboratories in support of teaching, research and creative activity in the ceramic arts,” said Georgia Strange, director of the art school.”The new building appropriately matches the national and international accomplishments garnered during the last six decades by the faculty and graduates of the ceramics art program in the Lamar Dodd School of Art.”

“In collaboration with the UGA Office of University Architects, Tony Menefee’s (Menefee & Winer Architects of Atlanta) vision and commitment to architectural excellence has succeeded in creating a gem of a building out of simple structural elements and materials, where others may have envisioned a mere warehouse enclosure,” said Linda Henneman, architect from UGA’s Office of University Architects, who served as owner’s project manager for the construction. “With its lofty interiors and even dramatic lighting in its multi-use lobby, this new home for ceramics is a ‘must see to believe’ facility.”
