Athens, Ga. – Palagummi Sainath, an award-winning Indian journalist and photojournalist who reports primarily on poverty and social problems, will speak on the University of Georgia campus on Friday, Dec. 5.
Sainath’s speech is part of the Department of Geography Colloquium Series and will take place at 3:30 p.m. in room 200C of the geology-geography building on UGA’s South Campus. The event is open free to the public.
His presentation here is called “The Age of Inequality: Farm Crisis, Food Crisis and the Media.”
Sainath was the 2007 winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Award in the category of Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts. The award has been called the equivalent of the Asian Nobel Prize.
In his position as rural affairs editor for The Hindu, the largest English-language newspaper in India with a circulation of more than one million, Sainath has become a presence in his native country. His book, Everybody Loves a Good Drought, was also a bestseller there.
Sainath’s visit is sponsored by UGA’s Graduate Student Association Committee for International Affairs and Indian Student Association as well as its departments of agricultural leadership, education and communication; biological and agricultural engineering; and geography. Asha-Athens, a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to socio-economic change in India mainly using the medium of education, is also a sponsor.
