Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia School of Law’s Sports and Entertainment Law Society will host the Fifth Annual Protect Athens Music Conference March 3 starting at 4:30 p.m. at the 40 Watt Club in downtown Athens. The event is free and open to the public.
The conference will address issues relevant to the intersection of law, music and business for musicians, students, professionals and anyone interested in music or the music business.
“This event is perfect for anyone who wants to know more about the business and legal side of the music industry,” said Payton Bradford, conference organizer and second-year law student. “The conference will address issues affecting the ever-evolving music scene and celebrate the rich music scene that exists in Athens.”
There will be two panel sessions featuring industry professionals, local musicians, publicists and journalists. Discussions will center on issues related to publicity and promotion, with an emphasis on crowdsourcing and public relations, and the role of record labels today, with topics ranging from types of agreements to strengths and weaknesses of various sized labels to the role of labels in a largely digital area. The panels, which will feature question and answer sessions following each discussion, will be moderated by David Barbe, director of the UGA Terry College of Business Music Business Program, and third-year law student Michelle Gilzenrat Davis, the former music editor for Flagpole magazine.
