Recent works by Martha Macleish open summer season at Broad Street Gallery

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art Galleries are pleased to present Martha Macleish: Recent Works, an exhibition of new sculptural wall forms by Indiana-based artist Martha Macleish. The exhibition is open through the month of May, with an artist lecture and closing reception to be held on Tuesday, May 22. The lecture will take place at the Visual Arts Building, Room 116, from 6-7 p.m., and the closing reception will take place at the Lamar Dodd School of Art Broad Street Gallery from 7:30-9 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view at Broad Street Gallery through May 22.

With this recent body of curvilinear constructions, Macleish uses linguistic and painterly analogies to approach concerns relative to the mute topography of the typical wall. Acknowledging her work at the boundary-lines of painting and sculpture, she asserts that her wall-forms often are hybrids that resist categorization. Although a trained painter, there is little doubt that a practiced sculptor is at work. Macleish employs as her primary material sheets of white (and sometimes colored) plastic, which are sanded, shaped, and joined in space to create forms that encourage associations with biology – they are amorphous and amoeba-like – and, just as easily, architecture – the scale models and paintings of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid come to mind.

Macleish is an assistant professor, director of Fundamental Studios, and director of graduate studies of the studio art department of Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. Her work is exhibited widely nationally, in both solo exhibitions and curated group exhibitions, most recently for Plane Text, at 1708 Gallery in Richmond, Va., and Recent Work, at Artemisia Gallery, Chicago. Macleish has taught in the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University, at Savannah College of Art and Design, and at Southern Utah University. She received her M.F.A in painting from Yale University School of Art and her B.F.A. in painting and B.A. in art history from the University of Massachusetts.
