UGA reception to celebrate International Agriculture Day, retired director

Athens, Ga. - The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Office of Global Programs will celebrate global outreach during its International Agriculture Day Reception April 16 from 4-6 p.m. in Rooker Hall's Fireside Lounge.
In addition to the annual program of awards and recognitions, this year the college celebrates the career of recently retired Office of Global Programs director Edward T. Kanemasu. At the event, J. Scott Angle, the college's dean and director, will announce the establishment of the Edward T. Kanemasu Global Engagement Award for international student travel and education.
The award recognizes Kanemasu's career as the college's former assistant dean of international affairs and director of global programs. His legacy at UGA includes developing global relationships and connecting personally with students, faculty and scientists on an international scale.
"Ed Kanemasu led the effort to move the college from (an institution) focused almost entirely domestically to one that allowed the college to become a player around the world in teaching, research and outreach," Angle said. "The college has become much better because of the effort led by Dr. Kanemasu and, in turn, we have been better able to help others."
To further highlight the college's global humanitarian efforts, guest speaker Sally Wells of Birdsong Peanuts will discuss domestic and international work toward fighting hunger and natural disasters in her talk on "Peanuts: Changing Lives Around the World."
The International Agriculture Day Reception also will celebrate the global engagement of the college's students and will feature student presentations on their experiences abroad, recognition of graduating International Agriculture Certificate students and the announcement of the Undergraduate Global Citizen and Graduate Travel awards. The winners of the annual Ag Abroad Photo Contest will be selected during the event.
Refreshments will be provided by Dondero's Kitchen, and Latin American and Middle Eastern music will be performed by composer David Marcus.
