Athens, Ga. – James F. Day, retired director of housing at the University of Georgia, has received the top honor for professional service and contributions from the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International.
Day received the ACUHO-I Award, which recognizes distinguished service to the association and the field of student housing and food service. The award, presented only to people who have retired or left the field, is the association’s highest honor.
He recently received the award at the association’s annual conference.
Day became UGA housing director in 1990 and retired in 2006. During his 36-year career as a housing professional he also held positions at Iowa State University, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Ball State University and the University of Miami.
Day’s involvement with ACUHO-I dates to 1972 and includes service on numerous committees including serving as chair of the placement committee and chair of a subcommittee on study tour grants. He was a member of task forces on graduate preparation and graduate awards, and was the regional representative for the membership committee.
He has made presentations at numerous conferences and training workshops, helped plan the first Southeastern Housing Facilities Forum and has been a consultant for 16 housing programs. Last year he received the ACUHO-I Foundation Parthenon Award for Leadership and Service.
Day is the third UGA housing director to receive the ACUHO-I Award since it began in 1964. Previous winners were Dan Hallenbeck and John Storey.
